Cool Anthony's Week 7 Picks

2

Last week: 4-10. Season totals: 38-49-1, Pct. .438. Best Bets: 9-9, Pct. .500.

Home team in capital letters; point spreads (opening line) in parentheses after underdog team; selections with point spreads in bold.

SUNDAY

N.Y. GIANTS
34, San Francisco 17 (+12) - Double-digit favorites are a costly 1-8 against the line so far this year, when through the first eight weeks of last season, they were 8-4; but the six teams from the Mountain and Pacific time zones have covered only two of ten in '08 when playing in the early time slot (with both covers being registered by the Raiders, oddly enough).

N.Y. Jets 20, OAKLAND 13 (+3 1/2) - The last time Brett Favre was in town, he lit it up on a Monday night after his father had just died. No such dramatic dynamic at work here, and the Jets have covered seven of ten on grass over the past three seasons.

BUFFALO 21 (+1), San Diego 17 - Might as well stick with the coast-to-coast angle alluded to in the Giant pick until doing so starts to produce losses instead of near-monotonous profits.

New Orleans 23 (+4), CAROLINA 16 - Upset special. Carolina's bubble may have burst last week in Tampa and the Saints have won six, and covered seven, of their last eight on the road against the Panthers.

MIAMI 20, Baltimore 10 (+3) - The Ravens have steadily flatlined after their promising start, and the franchise (Cleveland prior to 1996) is 2-8 straight up lifetime in Miami, and also 1-6 both ways on natural grass in 2007-08.

Pittsburgh 16, CINCINNATI 3 (+9 1/2) - Of all the teams that have started out 0-6 in the 16-game era, only two finished higher than 4-12, and both of those ('78 Cardinals and '98 Redskins) were 6-10 - so there's no reason to rush Carson Palmer back from his lingering elbow injury. Steelers have covered 13 of their last 18 in the City of Satan, and should reward their backers there again.

CHICAGO 28, Minnesota 7 (+3) - It's not necessary to rehash how horrible the Vikings have been outdoors and/or on grass throughout this millennium, and they just come off a two-point win at home over the same team the Bears walloped by 27 on the road the week before.

Dallas 23, ST. LOUIS 20 (+7) - Whether Tony Romo tries to play or not, it won't help the reeling Dallas defense, particularly the secondary; and the Cowboys are 5-12 outright (and also pointwise) indoors dating back to 1996. If Romo can go, the Rams merely cover, and if he can't, St. Louis wins straight up.

Tennessee 27, KANSAS CITY 0 (+7 1/2) - I wonder what team rule Larry Johnson broke to get suspended for this game. Maybe the rule against hindering his team's chances of drafting Matthew Stafford?

HOUSTON 20, Detroit 0 (+9) - But apparently the Lions aren't going to let the Chiefs have Stafford without a fight, placing Jon Kitna on season-ending injured reserve after trying and failing to trade him before Tuesday's deadline (?). And while we're on the subject of fighting, Kitna's hapless successor is Dan Orlovsky (who ran out of bounds in his own end zone last week, not realizing that constitutes a safety), not to be confused with former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski.

WASHINGTON 24, Cleveland 21 (+7) - Don't know what to make of either team after last week - and when you don't know what to think, you don't lay seven points.

GREEN BAY 20, Indianapolis 14 (+1) - Now it turns out that Peyton Manning had two pre-season knee operations instead of one; and with the Colts stopping nobody on the ground all year and their own top running back out injured, the Packers may be able to parlay a distinct advantage in time of possession into what would be the home team's fifth straight win in this series.

TAMPA BAY 24, Seattle 0 (+10 1/2) - Jeff Garcia is back (as a starter) while Matt Hasselbeck is not. After only one shutout in the first six weeks, you get three this week.

MONDAY NIGHT

Denver
34 (+3 1/2), NEW ENGLAND 14 - Let's see the Patriots try and run on the Broncos (or any defense, for that matter) the way Jacksonville did; and the Super Bowl Runner-Up Jinx reconfirmed its primacy in San Diego Sunday night. Denver's active five-game cover streak at Foxboro is mere addendum.

BEST BETS: NEW ORLEANS, CHICAGO, DENVER
