Baseball's Best Contact Hitter

Who do you think it is?

CKFresh 08-20-2008 05:43 PM

All-time, or active?

catman 08-20-2008 06:03 PM

Both. I'm interested in the opinions. Is anyone a better contact hitter than DiMaggio was? How about Jason Kendall?

themush 08-20-2008 06:34 PM

Ichiro. Period.

da12ken 08-20-2008 06:54 PM

Ability to make good, consistent contact? Pujols.

Brandon 08-20-2008 09:32 PM

I'd have to go with Ichiro right now.

Limiting it to the previous 20 or seasons (due to me being able to watch hitters from the past two decades, I'd say Tony Gwynn is at least one of the greatest of the last 20 years if not more. I always liked watching him hit.

Joe Sewell by a mile. He struck out just once every 62 at bats and never struck out more than 20 times in one season.

Of active players with at least 3000 plate appearances Juan Pierre has the best ratio of one strikeout per 16.7 ABs.

Ichiro is actually 8th and Pujols is 15th.

Pete Rose would deserve consideration.

I think currently it would have to go to Ichiro.

Adam Dunn and Ryan Howard are close, but they have some work to do.

themush 08-21-2008 03:55 PM

Wade Boggs????

Dunn and Howard strike out way too much to be seriously considered. And if we're talking this year Ian Kinsler has been as good as anyone.

Tony Gwynn from when I grew up, Ichiro for right now, Howie Kendrick in 2 years.

Somehow, I'd guess CK was being a little facetious.

At least I'd hope so.

One wonders how hitting has evolved over the years. I mean, even when I was a bit younger 100 strikeouts was a black eye for hitters. Now it's commonplace.

All these people that are saying Ichiro obviously don't watch a lot of Mariners game.

The Irish 08-22-2008 09:18 AM

Pete Rose hands down.

A great example of this, better than Dunn or Howard, is Matt Kemp. 126ks right now, but batting .300 and probably just going to get better.
