Amare Stoudemire in the dunk contest?

why? i havent seen any spectacular dunking to deem him worthy for the dunk contest. yes the dude can throw it down, but not a dunk contest type of dunk...hes more of a Shaq kind of dunk and we dont see him in the dunk contest...

Why? Because nobody is too terribly interested in seeing Chris Anderson, J. R. Smith and Josh Smith that is why. You have two rookies from two fo the worst teams in the league (ATL and New Orleans) which means casual fans have no clue who they are. The third guy, Anderson, plays for New Orleans as well. The NBA is desparately trying to get some more known players in the dunk contest because nobody cares about watching the Fred Jones' of the world in the dunk contest anymore.

I guess that could be a case, but if thats the case, then they need to stop limiting it, and let the Vince Carter's come back to the dunk contest. Just watching the first half of the Rookie Challenge tonight, i think Josh Smith is gonna show us some good stuff tomorrow night in the dunk contest.

I wish we could have seen LeBron in the dunk contest though, too bad he turned it down.

It sounds as though LeBron isn't doing All Star weekend altogether.

Vince Carter isn't in the dunk contest because he does not want to be. The NBA would love it if Carter would do the dunk contest again. I promise you the NBA is not keeping Carter out of that contest.

I could have sworn they said last year that the dunk contest was limited to guys who are in their first 3 years in the NBA...like rookies, sophomores and 3rd year guys. And LeBron says he is playing, hes playin in the rookie game tonight, and he says hes going to play in the All-star Game on Sunday.

Anyways, i think Josh Smith has a good chance to win the dunk contest, and Kyle Korver is putting on a show with his 3 point shooting in the Rookie Challenge, so i wouldnt be surprised if he won the 3-point contest.

Whats happened to Jason Richardson?

HibachiDG 02-19-2005 11:53 AM

What's Amare gonna do? Walk to the post? Back down an invisible man? All I'm wondering about what Amare will pull out of the bag is whether or not he'll dunk with one hand or two.

At this point, I'd be in favor of lowering the rim and letting Stephen A. Smith and Nelly go at it until their legs give out.

Yeah, I see where LeBron decided to show up after all. There were some stories circulating late Thursday that he may take the weekend off due to coming down with a touch of the flu and having a sore ankle.

No, the dunk contest is not limited to younger players. He is not in it this year because he did not make the all star team as a reserve, but was quoted as saying he would have participated if LeBron were competing this year. It would be asinine for the league to put that kind of a stip on the dunk contest. The league would be more than happy to have guys like Carter, Kobe, T-Mac, and Steve Francis in there. The main reason nobody cares now is the lack of marquee players. The only reason the contest was such a huge event back in its hey day was because the big name guys like MJ, 'Nique, and Dr. J agreed to do it.

I think we may be surprised at what Amare offers up tonight.

what time is the skills challenge?

coachJ 02-19-2005 06:18 PM

either 8 or 9 PM EST....im not sure when that starts...

From the highlights I've seen, Josh Smith had some incredible dunks. I saw he put on a throwback Dominique jersey and perfectly replicated that dunk. And at least Amare had some creativity (and humor) bouncing the ball of Nash's head. I am curious to see how my guys from New Orleans did. I have it TiVo'ed and will check it out soon.

Stoudemire ended up with the dunk of the night.

I was going crazy when he bounced it off the backboard, off Steve Nash's head, and dunked it. Very creative and very original.

It made watching the dunk contest worth while.

coachJ 02-20-2005 02:23 AM

That was creative, but it wasnt the best dunk of the night. Amare didnt show me anything, he just showed me why a big man who doesnt do anything but spin around and do a regular dunk in the regular season shouldnt be in the dunk contest. IMO Josh Smith made the dunk contest worth watching tonight, because without him it would have sucked. The other guys really didnt put on a show.

HibachiDG 02-20-2005 03:01 AM

Josh Smith's dunks were fun to watch. The jump over Kenyon Martin dunk was great. Loved that one.

da12ken 02-20-2005 03:57 AM

Best dunk was the Smith/Martin combo. Put that with Webb, Jordan, Rider, Wilkins, Irving, etc.

Chris Andersen set back white NBA players ten years.
