Exclamation Source: Piazza Seeks Trade

Phoenix -- Mike Piazza, the Mets' highest-profile player for the last six seasons, intends to inform the team shortly that he would welcome a trade to an American League club, according to a source familiar with the situation.

The 35-year-old catcher has been unhappy with the Mets' direction, the source said, and particularly displeased with the idea of becoming a first baseman. Piazza would prefer a situation where he could catch a few days a week and start at designated hitter the other days, and would be willing to waive his no-trade privilege for the right deal.

Piazza's agent, Dan Lozano, didn't return a call for comment. Here at the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa, Mets general manager Jim Duquette didn't make himself available for questions.

Of course, just because Piazza is interested in playing elsewhere doesn't mean his wish will be granted. As per the terms of the seven-year, $91-million deal that Piazza signed with the Mets in the 1998-99 offseason, the nine-time All-Star is due $15 million each of the next two years, and $3.5 million of his $7.5-million signing bonus was deferred.

What should/will happen to Piazza?
