That kind of brings up a "dumb" question.....

How many AB's do you need to qualify for the batting title?

I think it's 3 plate appearances per game??? Could be wrong though.

It is actually 3.1 plate appearances per number of games the player's team has played. So, generally speaking, one needs 502 plate appearances in a given season to qualify for the batting title.

A little quirk to add to that is if you don't have enough plate appearances, you can still win the batting title, if you add enough plate appearances with the same amount of hits and the player still has the best BA, they still win. I think Tony Gwynn may have done this one year. Don't quote me on that, since I don't have a chance to back my Gwynn claim up.

Yes, that is correct. Gwynn won the '96 batting crown based on this technicality. McGwire got the '95 slugging title this way as well. According to Baseball Reference this is what one needs to win:

The dog fight in the AL Central continues. Both the Twins and White Sox won today. It appears the Tigers will not win the AL Central as I have thought they would. It also appears the White Sox will not fade away.

The Mets are holding things together in their bullpen with duct tape and baling wire. Luis Ayala is their most recent acquisition. He's been pretty bad this season, but a change of scenery may be what he needs.
This said, Johan Santana deserves to have more than 11 wins this season.

Looks like Isringhausen's season, and possibly his career, is over:

This makes the Wainwright heading back to the 'pen scenario seem more likely when he gets back.

Similar story for Tom Glavine.

Glavine will undergo season ending surgery to repair the flexor tendon in his elbow, but there is no ligament damage. He may be back next season after all.
ATLANTA -- Tests show Braves pitcher Tom Glavine has no ligament damage in his left elbow, leaving open the possibility he could return next season.

Glavine was examined by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., on Wednesday. As expected, the test showed the 42-year-old Glavine has a partial tear in the flexor tendon in his left elbow.

The test also showed the ligament was intact and showed only normal wear, according to a statement released by Braves spokesman Brad Hainje. Glavine has said he would retire if told he needed ligament-replacement surgery.

Glavine will have surgery Thursday to repair the tendon and is expected to face a recovery period of four to five months.

I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up retiring anyways. He's said he'll only play for the Braves, and although the odds I think are halfway decent of Frank Wren bring Glavine back, I wouldn't be shocked if he ends up going younger in the rotation.

Adam Dunn has made the D-Backs a much better team.

His presence in any line-up makes the hitters around him better.
