Default Heisman Hopefuls

Who do you think will take it?

Heisman Hopefuls

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SportsLine's J. Darin Darst ranks his top five Heisman candidates. Below you'll find everything you need to help you determine who are the favorites for the 2004 Heisman Trophy.

For more on the Heisman Trophy race, check out last year's breakdown and take a look at the previous Heisman Trophy winners.

Alex Smith, QB
School: Utah
Class: Junior
Ht: 6-4 Wt: 205
Comment: Alex Smith didn't have a great performance against BYU, throwing for only 184 yards and two interceptions, but he stays No. 1. Why? Because without Alex Smith, Utah isn't even thinking about playing in a BCS bowl. For 10 games this season, Smith has been the best player in college football, racking up 38 total touchdowns (28 passing, 10 rushing) and only four interceptions.

Passing Rushing
Comp Att Pct. Yds TD INT Att Yds Avg TD
Last game (11/20) vs. BYU 16 24 66.7 184 1 2 14 34 2.4 1
2004 Season 185 280 66.1 2,624 28 4 120 563 4.9 10

Adrian Peterson, RB
School: Oklahoma
Class: Freshman
Ht: 6-2 Wt: 210
Comment: Can a freshman win the Heisman? It might be possible this season, especially the way Peterson is playing. He had a 240-yard performance against Baylor, giving him his 10th 100-yard rushing performance of the season. He is ranked third in the nation in rushing yards per game and will get another chance to add to that in the Big 12 Championship.

Rushing Receiving
Att Yds Avg TD Rec Yds Avg TD
Last game (11/20) vs. Baylor 32 240 7.5 3 0 0 0.0 0
2004 Season 286 1,671 5.8 12 3 6 2.0 0

Jason White, QB

School: Oklahoma
Class: Senior
Ht: 6-2 Wt: 215
Comment: The book on White is simple. He is having another excellent season (30 touchdowns and only four interceptions), but his statistics are not as good as they were last season. It's very unlikely that White will win consecutive Heisman trophies, unless he can have a superstar game in the Big 12 title game. But one thing is for sure, he'll be in New York on Dec. 11.

Passing Rushing
Comp Att Pct. Yds TD INT Att Yds Avg TD
Last game (11/20) vs. Baylor 19 32 59.3 194 2 0 1 1 1.0 0
2004 Season 209 325 64.3 2,707 30 4 20 -48 -2.4 0

Cedric Benson, RB
School: Texas
Class: Senior
Ht: 6-0 Wt: 215
Comment: Take out the 92-yard, zero touchdown performance against Oklahoma out of the equation and Cedric Benson is the Heisman winner -- hands down. But that fact is, that game does count and that will be the one thing that prevents him from winning the award. He is having a fantastic season and continues to run wild on teams, but that one game will cost him the award.

Rushing Receiving
Rec Yds Avg. TD Att Yds Avg TD
Last game (11/13) vs. Kansas 28 161 5.8 1 3 18 6.0 0
2004 Season 270 1,599 5.9 18 19 166 8.7 1

Matt Leinart, QB
School: Southern California
Class: Junior
Ht: 6-5 Wt: 220
Comment: Leinart is still a favorite to win the Heisman, but when you compare raw numbers, the junior just doesn't stack up. Leinart has fewer yards and touchdowns than Oklahoma's White and Utah's Smith, but has thrown more interceptions. Yes, he plays for the No. 1 team in the nation, but the Heisman is awarded to the best player in the nation and Leinart might not even be the best player on his team.

Passing Rushing
Comp Att Pct. Yds TD INT Att Yds Avg TD
Last game (11/13) vs. Arizona 27 35 77.1 280 3 0 3 7 2.3 0
2004 Season 203 309 65.7 2,348 23 5 41 -16 -0.4 3

Leinert probably wrapped it up last night with his 400 yard 5-TD performance on national TV. That was the breakout game folks have been wanting to see from him.

I don't care who wins as long as it isn't Jason White. I'm hoping for a Sooner loss in the Big 12 game so he looses and Auburn and USC can play.

I think Adrian Peterson but Reggie Bush deserves to be on the hopefuls list.

Matt Leinart. If he enters the NFL Draft and San Francisco has the #1 pick, I wouldn't be surprised to see him repeat what Carson Palmer did two years ago.

Matt Leinart will get this one. I just hope neither of those two from OU gets it. I think they are both a bit overhyped.

I think Leinart. I will hate if White wins it. I would love for Alex Smith of Utah to win it. I would be cool with either the Peterson or Bush winning it, though. More power to the underclasses!

Oh, wait, that's a mildly different argument, isn't it?

Insane. Completely insane.

I'd give it to Peterson before I gave it to Benson.
Anyone who comes out midseason and says he'd rather win the Heisman that beat the school's archrival doesn't even deserve to play the game against said archrival.

Screw Benson.

Leinart will win it. But, barely.

It won't happen, but if the Heisman were only voted on by me, I just my give it to JJ Arrington....6.8 yards per carry, more than these other RBs that have a shot, on a team that is probably just as good. 6.8. Amazing. And country-leading.

Alex Smith.

All of these other teams have a ton of weapons around their Heisman candidates. Smith doesn't have that luxury and was relied on all season.
