Man this is sad. What a tragedy. God help us. I hope it wasn't terrorist related.

Sorry 31 killed.

Very sad. Let's hope the death toll doesn't rise anymore...

Death toll is 30.

He was able to strike in a dorm in the morning, he then killed an entire class. After he was killed, the death tol reached 31.

Unbelievable...

absolutely senseless. Being on a college campus myself, I can't believe how it must feel for students in Blacksburg. Hearts and minds out to all the loved ones...

When my wife and I heard about this today, we were both very relieved that the school our daughter attends is a "safe" place.
This was, as was said earlier, senseless.

I don't know what I would consider to be a "safe" place today. 99% of places are safe 99% of the time, but horrors like this I'm sad to say seem to be able to happen anywhere.

what a horrible situation we have here. do you guys think the school president should be under fire like he is? i mean, you can only do so much in a situation like this. you can't shut down a school of 25,000 people in 30 minutes, as people have suggested. why can't we ever blame the shooter? the media coverage of this is driving me insane.

Everytime something like this happens they have to point the finger. Nobody or no institution has had to endure something like this before.

I would hope its less of a decision to point the finger, and more of a move to discover what sorts of mistakes were made to help prevent another university or institution from making those same, potentially costly, mistakes during an unforeseen tragedy.

A similar situation happened at the University of Iowa a few years back. A foreign grad student in Physics had received what he felt was an improper grade on a project and he took his revenge on 2 professors (the one that gave him a "poor" grade and his advisor), a department secretary -- she survived the attack, but is a paraplegic -- and his "rival". He then turned the gun on himself and ended the carnage. He said in a suicide note that he felt "dishonored by the poor grade".

The disheartening thing is this guy had a pattern of red-flag behavior (stalking girls, gruesome writing for assignments, etc.) and he had been reported to the police before ... but not enough was done. And I heard due to privacy laws, the school couldn't contact his parents about his behavior.
