Default Series 3: Toronto (4) vs. New York Islanders (5)

The Isles are back in the playoffs for the first time in... what seems like EVER against the strong Leafs who are recovering from regular season injuries, including a broken hand to star goalie CuJo who missed 21 games in March and April.

Discuss this Eastern Quarter Final here.

As a Ranger fan, I hope the Islanders lose.

Gotta go with the 2002 Eastern Conference Champion, Toronto Maple Leafs

j/king, but I do see the Leafs going representing the East in the Finals -- they're recovering from injuries (what's the word on Yuschevich -- he back yet??)... the big one being CuJo returning after missing 21 games due to a broken hand. If he's really 100% healthy, the Leafs will go deep.

O ya -- I was gonna mention somethin' bout the Islanders but I forget

Ya of course the Islanders will be a tough opp. for the Leafs, but they'll still win.

Fans think Yashin is their savior!?... Well well well -- they'll get a bad taste in their mouths after witnessing the April version of Ca$hin Ya$hin. I look for him to have a sleeper series, much like... well.. ALL of them that he played when he was in Ottawa.

Leading team scorer in NHL with 94 points.... MVP nominee.... no points in the playoffs. That was 2000 or 1999 or something. I don't want to remember. Where's all those Isle fans that used to be on this board? I promise -- he'll fluke yet again in the playoffs, wanting to get on those links ASAP.

Yes he has struggled in the past no doubt but that was because all the problems with Ottawa, now that he's on a fresh team with Peca and Osgood I see them beating the Leafs hopefully

Toronto did well last year and Joseph is amazing. Leafs win it in 6. At least I hope they do...

Thumbs up Lee's Bottom Line

LEE'S BOTTOM LINE

Here's a sneak peak of tomorrow's NHL preview article that will appear on the SC mainsite (please forgive me -- not proofread just yet )

Eastern Quarter Final: (4) Toronto Maple Leafs vs. (5) New York Islanders

The Maple Leafs are another team that has played steady all year long. Unlike last season, in which they were healthy all year but finished well under expectations at 7th in the East, they were injury-prone this season but managed to battle through to win home ice in the first round. In a completely different universe, the Islanders have built through three years of drafting and the two major offseason acquisitions of Mike Peca and Alexei Yashin. On offense, the Leafs have a definite edge, but, moreso in this series than any other, this series will come down to goaltending. Curtis Joseph is returning after missing 21 games due to a broken hand, and we'll see how much gas Chris Osgood has left in the tank after leading the Red Wings out of the playoffs early last season.

Bottom Line: This is the Leafs' year after three years of building a serious contender. Islanders still need improvement, but this year was a big step. Leafs in 5.

I dont think anyone is giving New York the enough credit they deserve. This series will go far. Toronto hasnt put together a team for the stanley cup, they never do that, why? Fans show up regardless and as long as tickets sell why spend bigger bucks on the superstars? (In their mind). Leafs are still physically beat up, if they do sneak out of this series and face a Boston or Philedelphia then its bye bye time.

I don't think the Isles are that great a team, just average, even though they are 5th. Don't go telling me that the Isles didn't have a few lucky ones.
