Default Buc's troubles just beginning...

Gruden must be goin' nuts about now. Lettin' Griese go sure does hurt now....

Bucs' Simms rushed to hospital after loss

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Tampa Bay quarterback Chris Simms needed emergency surgery to remove his spleen following Sunday's 26-24 loss to the Carolina Panthers, FOX Sports has confirmed.

Simms was conscious and alert after the procedure Sunday, a source with knowledge of his treatment said. He is expected to recover, but will remain hospitalized for 2-3 days, and sources say it will be months before he's able to play again.

Team spokesman Jeff Kamis confirmed that Simms, who left the game briefly but returned, was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital, a few blocks from Raymond James Stadium. Kamis declined to comment on the quarterback's condition or the nature of his injury.

Coach Jon Gruden said during his postgame press conference that Simms hurt his ribs early in the game and was also battling dehydration.

"He is hurting right now, there is no question," Gruden said. "He left the game. I don't know that it was because of his ribs, dehydration or both."

Simms was replaced by rookie Bruce Gradkowski for the last play of the third quarter and first play of the fourth. He went to the ground on one knee before leaving the field and walking to the locker room on his own power.

The Bucs punted two plays later, and Simms returned to the game when Tampa Bay got the ball back. He led a fourth-quarter field goal drive that gave the Bucs a 24-23 lead, but the defense couldn't hold.

When he left the game, the team announced he was cramping. The 26-year-old finished the game, which Carolina won on John Kasay's 46-yard field goal with 2 seconds remaining, and left the field with his teammates on his own power.

Simms completed 13 of 24 passes for 139 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He was sacked once and also took a hard hit when he scored on a 2-yard run that gave Tampa Bay a 21-20 lead in the third quarter.

The Buccaneers are idle next week. According to league sources, they're expected to replace Simms with either Gradkowski or Luke McCown, who is due to return soon from a knee injury suffered during minicamp. McCown was the Bucs' No. 2 quarterback before suffering the injury.

Bruce Gradkowski and Luke McCown?

Jeff George could beat either of those dudes out for the starting job throwing the ball with the wrong hand.

Oh well, another out-of-division cupcake for the Eagles to devour (October 22nd at Tampa); could they possibly finish 10-6 this year by going 0-6 within the division and 10-0 outside? (The '84 Chargers arrived at 7-9 via an 0-8 division record and a 7-1 non-division mark).

Okay, I have bagged on Simms in the past, but damn. That is definately showing toughness, coming on the field in what had to have been excruciating pain.

I wish Chris Simms a full and speedy recovery.

Shaun King, Tommy Maddox and Kliff Kingsbury are in town for a tryout. Who the hell is Kliff Kingsbury?

Oh and the Bucs are also believed to be seeking a trade for Raiders backup Marques Tuiasosopo.

I can't handle this crap.

Heck, isn't Drew Henson still out there? Why not bring him in for a look.

Klingsbury is part of the Texas Tech QB Machine. No one in that system ever made it...as far as I can recall.

There has been speculation about an eventual workout with Henson but nothing concrete.

They've got some big trouble in Tampa. I hate it for Jon Gruden. Not really.
