Default Political thought of the day

Many members (specifically Tarkus) have complained that there are not enough political threads around here lately.

In response to popular demand, this is a thread for basic political discussion. It seems that most of the political threads get off topic very quickly. So if you have a thought, or news story that you don't feel warrants its own thread, discuss it here.

First one will be positive:

Republicans help Democrats add to war funding bill

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Senate Republicans have broken with President Bush to help Democrats add support for veterans and the unemployed to a bill paying for another year of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

The 75-22 vote also adds billions of dollars in other domestic funds such as heating subsidies for the poor and money for fighting wildfires to the $165 billion for the military operations overseas.

The vote is a rebuke to Bush, who has promised to veto the measure if it contains the domestic measures. However, the president still has enough GOP support to sustain a veto.

The House still has to act on the bill. Last week, the House voted to reject money for continuing the war.

The huge tally in the Senate was driven by the popular money to extend unemployment benefits by 13 weeks and providing returning Iraq war veterans with sharply increased college aid.

But dozens of add-ons favored by senators in both parties contributed to the unexpectedly sweeping tally.

Such initiatives included money for Louisiana and Mississippi for projects including levees and coastal restoration.

There's also $850 million for international food aid, $1.9 billion for military construction projects, and several billion dollars in various foreign aid programs - all requested by the administration.

In subsequent votes, the Senate was poised to approve $165 billion to fund Pentagon operations in Iraq and Afghanistan into next year and reject Democratic efforts to urge Bush to begin redeployment of combat troops and place other strings on his ability to conduct the war in Iraq.

Yeah, I was being sarcastic.

Seriously though. This is an attempt to LIMIT the number of political threads. Instead of creating a new thread for every political event or story, the "minor" news stories can be posted in one thread.

I think it will help cut down on the number of threads on politics.

And now for the most depressing information I have received in a long time:

Polls: Clinton does better in the swing states

(CNN) — A new series of Quinnipiac polls out of Ohio, Florida, and Pennsylvania appear to bolster Hillary Clinton's argument that she is better positioned than Barack Obama to beat John McCain in the crucial swing states.

According to the polls released Thursday, Hillary Clinton would beat John McCain in all three states by wide margins while Barack Obama would lose to the Arizona senator in Ohio and Florida and narrowly beat McCain in Pennsylvania.

CNN Polling Director Keating Holland said the poll could be a "early-warning sign" for Democrats, though cautioned early polls often are not predictive.

Specifically, the poll found Clinton tops McCain in Florida by 7 points (48 percent to 41 percent), in Ohio by 7 points (48 percent to 41 percent) and in Pennsylvania by 13 percent (50 percent to 37 percent).

Meanwhile the poll finds McCain would beat Obama by 4 points in Florida (45-41 percent) and by 4 points in Ohio (44 percent to 40 percent). Obama beats McCain in Pennsylvania, but by a narrower margin than Clinton does — he beats McCain by 6 points there, 46 percent to 40 percent.

According to Quinnipiac, the difference between Clinton and Obama's performances in the state can be traced to the fact that several Clinton supporters and white working class voters there say they will support McCain over Obama if the Illinois senator is the party's nominee. (Related: Can Obama win over the working class)

"This could be an early-warning sign for the Democrats, particularly since Obama did not do well in the Pennsylvania and Ohio primaries," Holland said. "On the other hand, any poll conducted in May — particularly when the primaries have not finished — may have little predictive value."

The last presidential candidate to win the White House without winning two of the three largest swing states was John F. Kennedy in 1960. (Kennedy won Pennsylvania that year, but lost Ohio and Florida.)

But the 2008 electoral map could look different than most recent elections, both the McCain and Obama campaigns have said. Each candidate has shown to strongly appeal to independent and moderate voters — meaning more states could be up for grabs this year than has been the case in past elections.

-----------------------

Apparently the misinformation campaign spread about Obama's "links to terrorism" have been affective...

I think I have lost all faith in this country and the poltical process. I thought we had finally turned the corner, but apparently some things never change.

I loved this one. Reminds me of me standing in front of the class...

You may have an A right now but it's a long time until June. I could accidentally change a few scores in the grade book due to my advancing age or perhaps you look at me wrong one day and suddenly you have an F.

Well, good ol' Fox News never seizes to amaze me....

I don't know who this b-itch is but she says:

"And now we have what some are reading as a suggestion that somebody knock off O-...Osam... Oba... Osama....uh, ummm... Obama. Well, both if we could."

Good stuff Fox News.
