My first choice for Magic coach would be Larry Brown, but I'll take Billy over Rick Carlisle any day.

OMG, wow!

Sue, I am sorry for you, I would be heartbroken. But as a rival fan, there is also a tinge of happiness.

All that heartbreak I felt over losing Billy D, turns out it was for the better. You have to think he would only go to the NBA if it was in Florida and that team has some bright spots with Dwight Howard.

I have to wonder if recruit Jai Lucas will back out of his LOI and go to Kentucky along with Patrick Patterson. Kentucky is SUPER hot in recruiting right now according to the gurus and is getting interest from top players now, alongside UNC and such, thanks to Coach Gillespie.

This may mean Florida's days as a powerhouse are over. I mean Billy built that program and it's not the same without him. And if this Magic deal bombs like Pitino in Boston, Calipari in Jersey, etc., Billy will never find the same kind of perfect scenario again. I guess in a few years if UK's Gillespie flops, too, he could come to Kentucky, but that's just way too far off now.

It is too late for that unless the Gators agree to let Lucas out of his Letter of Intent and that would also be assuming that Kentucky was number two on his list.

Can recruits be released from their LOI's if a coach leaves? Is it up to the coach/school/player/case-by-case?

It's so late into the recruiting process I doubt any of Florida's guys leave.

Yes, they can. NC State released its three recruits from their letters when Sendek left last spring. Dan Werner played for Florida this year and Larry Davis, I think his name was, played for Seton Hall. The thing of it is though is they typically get released with the stipulation that they do not go to another school within the conference which could put the kibosh on Lucas going to UK if he wanted to.

But, this is entirely up to the discretion of the school and they are under obligation to acquiesce.

Uh, shouldn't we wait until they hire someone before making that claim?

Boy am I glad UK didn't hire Billy Donovan now.... Florida doesn't even have a chance to hire a high profile coach until after next season. I understand the contract extension was never officially done, but the final effect is that he screwed over his own program.

On the flip side, if there was ever a time to leave Florida, it's after his best class ever leaves also.

"Billy Donovan informed the Magic and the University of Florida over the weekend that he had second thoughts about agreeing to be Orlando's head coach, but it's unclear if the NBA team will let him go."

Wow.

Plus, jumping to take a coaching position in the NBA is a very low-risk move for Billy Donovan. Even if he crash-and-burns in a couple of quick seasons in the league, there will still be a dozen top-named college basketball programs interested in him, regardless.

You have to commend the University of Florida for doing a great job in making Donovan reconsider his move, while also having Anthony Grant on stand-by ready to take the job.

If I was an Orlando Magic fan, I would much rather have Stan Van Gundy than Billy Donovan.

Behold, it's a rare occurrence, but I wrote a column on this: https://www.sports-central.org/sport...of_orlando.php

So he is returning to Florida. What do you think now, Sue? This is just crazy.

UPDATE: Just read there may a five-year NBA ban for him: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=2892797

Hmm, has anything like that been done before?
