Cool Anthony's Week 2 Picks

7

Last week: 8-8. Season totals: 8-8, Pct. .500. Best Bets: 0-3, Pct. .000.

Home team in capital letters; point spreads (opening line) in parentheses after underdog team; selections with point spreads in bold.

SUNDAY

N.Y. Giants 34 (+3), PHILADELPHIA 21 - Can't make up my mind what's more ridiculous here: This line (wouldn't you say that the wrong team is favored?) or the matchup of the Giant ground attack against an Eagle defense that can't stop the run either outside (because their outside linebackers are terrible) or inside (because their two starting defensive tackles are the smallest such tandem any NFL team has had in literally decades).

New England 20, N.Y. JETS 10 (+5 1/2) - The outcome of the Deion Branch imbroglio brings to mind Dean Rusk's famous remark right after the Cuban missile crisis: "We were eyeball to eyeball, and I think the other fellow just blinked." Even so, the Pats have beaten the Jets six in a row and are 5-0-1 against the spread therein, also having covered seven straight at Club Med, and their newly-discovered running game should dominate the weak Jet run defense.

ATLANTA 16, Tampa Bay 13 (+5 1/2) - It's back, with a vengeance - the "Donut Theory," one of the hottest betting angles in the NFL about 20 years ago: Teams that were shut out one week are 14-5-1 against the spread the following week over the past three seasons, and the Bucs are 7-2-1 spreadwise in their last ten on the carpet. Falcons pull it out with a late field goal.

CINCINNATI 27, Cleveland 21 (+10 1/2) - Last year the Bengals were barely able to squeeze by the Browns at home the week after playing (and beating) the Steelers in Pittsburgh. In this case they're hosting Cleveland the week before visiting Pittsburgh, and teams that are prone to letdowns also tend to be at risk for looking ahead, and vice versa.

MIAMI 23, Buffalo 13 (+6 1/2) - Can you top this? New England beat the Bills at home by two in the opener, so if the Dolphins want to make an early statement as to who the real team to beat is in the AFC East...

BALTIMORE 20, Oakland 0 (+10 1/2) - Remember Bill Troup? No quarterback has led an NFL team to back-to-back shutout losses to start a season since Troup, filling in for an injured Bert Jones, did so for the then-Baltimore Colts way back in 1978; and didn't Troup's miserable counterpart in baseball find some company three years ago when Mike Maroth became the first 20-game loser in the majors since Brian Kingman more than two decades prior?

INDIANAPOLIS 33, Houston 23 (+13 1/2) - With the Jets and Ravens both notching road victories last week the Texans inherited the league's longest-active road losing streak, at eight games; but they actually covered the spread in five of them and the Colts, who are 8-0 lifetime against Houston, just might get caught looking ahead to next week's biggie at home against Jacksonville.

GREEN BAY 17 (+1), New Orleans 14 - Maybe the Saints are lactose-intolerant or something: They haven't won in America's Dairyland (Green Bay or Milwaukee, where the Packers played some home games prior to 1995) since 1971, and got plastered 52-3 at Lambeau by a 4-12 Green Bay team last year.

Carolina 20, MINNESOTA 13 (+2) - Brad Johnson's scorched-earth tour continues (he is a North Carolina native), but the Panthers are in an absolute must-win situation and are 11-3-1 against the line on artificial turf since 2003 and 11-2 versus the points indoors since 2002.

CHICAGO 24, Detroit 10 (+8) - Was all ready to take the points in this one until Roy Williams did his pathetic Rasheed Wallace imitation and guaranteed a Detroit victory. Roy, don't you know that in this post-9/11 era the slip of a lip may scuttle a ship?

St. Louis 19, SAN FRANCISCO 13 (+3) - The Rams have been persistent money-burners on grass and outdoors ever since they moved into their dome eleven years ago, but maybe Scott Linehan's kinder, gentler version of The Greatest Show On Turf will fare better and St. Louis has double revenge to exact for last season's pair of 49er upsets.

SEATTLE 34, Arizona 20 (+7) - This number comes in a bit low and if Donte' Stallworth can walk right in and do what he did last week, then why can't Deion Branch do at least as well with presumably a much simpler playbook to learn?

DENVER 31, Kansas City 0 (+10) - Even at the best of times the Chiefs can't do anything in Denver (five straight losses and non-covers by an aggregate 69 points) and this is the worst of times for them to go there with Trent Green out. Look for the Broncos to stick eight in the box to stop Larry Johnson and make Damon Huard beat them - and needless to say, Huard won't even come close.

SAN DIEGO 34, Tennessee 10 (+12) - It has to be embarrassing to lose at home to a team that had dropped nine in a row on the road coming in, and the Titans have lost ten consecutive games against teams with winning records (something the Chargers should have no trouble managing this year) by a combined 184 points.

DALLAS 23, Washington 21 (+6) - Why is this number so high? True, the Cowboys have added T.O. since finishing a game behind the Redskins a year ago, but Washington has added Antwaan Randle-El and Brandon Lloyd while losing LaVar Arrington, but Dallas has lost La'Roi Glover. Seems like an even swap overall to me.

MONDAY NIGHT

Pittsburgh 20, JACKSONVILLE 7 (+1) - If Big Ben says he's going to play, that's good enough for me - and apparently for the oddsmakers as well since they obviously wouldn't have made the Steelers a road favorite if they thought he wasn't going to play; and Pittsburgh's recent form on natural grass has to be more than good enough for even the sparest critic: 10-3, both ways, since 2003.

BEST BETS: N.Y. GIANTS, DENVER, PITTSBURGH

Regardless of what happens in tonight's game, #99 is #1 in Week 2.

Ellis will complete the exacta if either Jacksonville covers or there is a push, while Nate grabs the place spot if Pittsburgh covers.

Complete results for the week after the game.
