Cool Anthony's Week 7 Picks

Last week: 7-7. Season totals: 43-47, Pct. .478. Best Bets: 7-11, Pct. .389.

Home team in capital letters; point spreads (opening line) in parentheses after underdog team; selections with point spreads in bold.

New England
34, Tampa Bay 3 (+14) - The British gave us the Beatles and the Rolling Stones - and we repay them with Tom Brady vs. Josh Johnson?

PITTSBURGH 24, Minnesota 23 (+4) - The Steelers simply refuse to cover, finding a way not to do so last week despite a 543-197 edge in total yards. They're now 1-6 against the line counting from the Super Bowl - and even if Brett Favre finally falls short this week, have a feeling that Pittsburgh's backers will too.

Green Bay 23, CLEVELAND 10 (+6 1/2) - It turns out that Eric Mangini has taken a page from Tom Coughlin's disciplinary playbook, fining players exhorbitant amounts for truly trivial transgressions. That's fine - no pun intended (?) - when you're winning, but the Browns of course are not. Unless Joshua Cribbs explodes again this week, the Packers easily win, and cover.

Indianapolis 37, ST. LOUIS 14 (+13) - You'll just have to hope that the Colts' exemplary play both coming off a bye (wins and covers in their last four) and in September and October generally (26-0 - that's right, 26-0 - straight up and 19-6-1 against the spread since 2005, not counting last year when Peyton Manning had pre-season surgery) is more relevant than the facts that they haven't beaten the Rams on the road since 1969 and that the home team has won the last four meetings overall.

San Diego 23, KANSAS CITY 21 (+4 1/2) - At this point the Chargers are playing for little more than second place in the AFC West, as are the Chiefs (and Raiders); and I'd safely imagine that means a lot more to KC than it does to San Diego.

HOUSTON 30, San Francisco 23 (+3) - One week after putting pay to their 17-game losing streak on artificial turf, the Texans equal their best September-October start in franchise history.

CAROLINA 14, Buffalo 10 (+7) - Why did they delay opening the line on this game because Trent Edwards (concussion) is questionable when it was Ryan Fitzpatrick who led the Bills to their come-from-behind win on the road last week? And the Panthers are now a powerhouse because they just edged the Redskins and the Buccaneers? Sorry, but I'm not buying it.

OAKLAND 17 (+7), N.Y. Jets 16 - If you missed Oakland's wedding last week, you may want to miss the ... anniversary party: Mark Sanchez is cruisin' for a benchin', and the Jets have lost and non-covered their last five road games in the Mountain and Pacific time zones (last having done either in a 2004 wild-card playoff win at San Diego), including going 0-4 in such games last year, one of which was at this very venue. Big balloons!

New Orleans 34, MIAMI 31 (+6 1/2) - Even as they have blown away everything in their path, the Saints still have only a one-game lead in their own division - and host the team that's within a game of them next week, and on Monday night no less, raising the specter of looking ahead. And Chad Henne has generated 69 points in his two starts - both at Miami, as this one is (and where New Orleans has never won). Take the points - and the over (the total opened at 47 1/2).

Chicago 23 (+1), CINCINNATI 17 - It may take the Bengals more than one week to get over the colossal embarrassment of losing to the Texans on the carpet, and Chicago's defense will be anxious to silence Cedric Benson, who has been running off at the mouth all week. The home team in this matchup is also 1-6-1 against the spread lifetime.

DALLAS 31, Atlanta 24 (+3) - Ask and you shall receive - unless you're asking too much, as in asking a team to win fatigue games in consecutive weeks after they had lost 11 of 14 in that situation prior, while concomitantly asking a team that is 15-5 straight up and 14-5-1 against the spread coming off a bye week (and has won and covered their last four) to toss in a clunker therein.

N.Y. GIANTS 35, Arizona 13 (+7) - The Cardinals must be glad that the 2002 realignment took them out of the NFC East, as they have gone 0-8 on the road versus their erstwhile division rivals since, are 1-6-1 against the line, and have been outscored by more than 16 points per game; and omit their three games at Washington and those respective numbers become 0-5 both ways and nearly 23 a pop. Best bet.

19 (+6 1/2), Philadelphia 17 - I'm marking down last week as Andy Reid and Donovan McNabb's "I've fallen ... and I can't get up" moment; plus they're 9-15 straight up in regular-season play within the NFC East since the latter got tired in the Super Bowl. And not for nothing, but if you don't think the Eagles will blow the Redskins out here, you might as well pick Washington to win outright in light of Philly's 1-7-1 2008-09 record in games decided by seven points or less.
