Default There's USC/Notre Dame....Michigan/OSU.....

And then there's Florida State and Florida.

As far as I am concerned, this is THE rivalry in college football. It doesn't have the tradition of USC/ND or Michigan/Ohio State.....but it is the most intense. The hatred is REAL. The players grew up hating each other. This rivalry stems back into HIGH SCHOOL....the guys have known and hated each other since lunch hour in the 7th grade.....pre-game fights.....coaches talkin smack to each other (Bowden/Spurrier)......etc.

4 of the 6 years of the BCS, the winner of this game has gone on to play for the National Championship.

Saturday........It's ON!!

Good point Purple. We had a thread here around May or so of this year talking about who our favorite rivalries were, and I said my favorite was Florida vs. FSU. In the process of saying that, I was told that rivalry is not a major or big enough rivalry. But I am right there with you in saying that this rivalry is right up there with any rivalry as far as intensity is concerned. I also agree that other rivalries like OSU vs. Michigan, Alabama vs. Auburn, etc. have more tradition and history, but I think Florida vs. FSU is one of the biggest rivalries in college football today.

But only 3 out of the last 5 years has the winner of this game gone to play for the National title though. In 1998, 1999, and 2000 FSU beat Florida to move on to the National Championship game. And even before the BCS, Florida vs. FSU in the 90's also determined who won the National title a few times.

As Joey noted, 78 and I lambasted him liking this rivalry best. Of course, 78 and I tend to be of like-minds when considering football south of Georgia. Not same-minds; his hatred runs a little hotter than mine, but I HATE this game. I usually find it unspeakably difficult to care about. While it was Spurrier v Bowden, I wanted both sidelines to be stricken with some flesh-eating virus that would keep both of them from ever coaching again, and now that it's weakened Bowden v sometime-coach Zook, I wonder which will win out: the uncoached, undisciplined talent, or the inept coach? In the end, I pray for a tie that has been wrongly stolen from us by idiotic rules changes.

Everyone thinks their rivalry is the best. But when objective people look at it, most of them say the OSU-Michgian rivalry is the best.

Hearing an Ohio State fan talk about being "objective" is like hearing Bin Laden talking about Peace in the Middle East.

Sure it makes sense, and there's a valid point made, but considering who's doing the talking, you just kinda have to laugh.

I think there is a big difference in a rivalry that is between two boardering states, as opposed to one that is between two in-state schools just down the freeway from each other.

Ohio kids go to OSU, and Michigan kids to to UM. In Florida, all three schools go after the same kids and someone you hated in high school, is suddenly the hated rival down the road in college, not across the state boarder. Craig Krenzel doesn't know Chris Perry......most FSU/UF/Miami kids have known each other all their lives and played WITH or AGAINST one another since junior high.

There's something between FSU and UF that just isn't there with other rivalries.

I think Ricky is refering to polls like those on ESPN where like 75% of the vote was for the OSU/Michigan rivalry being the best.

Yeah okay, tell that to 12 Wolverines, all who played this year and 6 were starters all from Ohio. 2 were defense leaders in Reid and Diggs.

If you want to go down the history line how about UM's past two Heisman winners, Howard and Woodson. Ohio boys.

That's one of the main reason the teams hate each other........they keep taking the other states players.

Ohio State only has 1 Michigan guy this season though, and that being Craig Krenzel. So, it isn't like each team has 20 some odd players from the other state.

Ricky's point is right on. Ricky and OSU guys think OSU-Michigan is tops (as do many poll respondents, as Nick pointed out), 33 thinks Auburn-Bama takes the cake, Joey likes FSU-UF while the only one that makes me crazy year-to-year is WVU-Pitt.

When I'm responding to polls, like the one Nick referred to, I usually go with OSU-Michigan for the following reasons:

1. It determines the conference champ more often than it doesn't
2. There aren't two better places in college football to watch a game be played than the Horseshoe & the Big House; both sets of fans are loud and crazy
3. They hate one another, and it shows
4. Despite the hate, they keep criminal activity on field to a relative minimum (how many brawls has FSU been involved in over the years--anything more than one is an unacceptable answer, imo)
5. I don't hate anything in particular about either program (though I'm thinking Tressel is something of a side-talking slime-o after this season, and Geiger may be the epitome of what's wrong with big-time athletics, aside from Paul Dee at Miami)
6. I've personally had more exposure to people who care about OSU-Michigan (excluding WVU-Pitt) than any other college football rivalry. Let me put it this way: my wife (from Maryland) knows about the bigness of OSU-Michigan; she knows where Florida State and Florida are... but nothing about their football games.

I agree that it's UM/OSU ... without a doubt. I feel pretty objective when saying that because I don't have a strong connection to either team. Florida/FSU is probably top-five, it's no slouch, but OSU/Michigan is more than a game to people in Columbus and Ann Arbor. I lived in Columbus and it has a tremendous affect on people. You know the game is on when the streets are empty. Literally!

Well, hell, Marc, the OSU-Michigan game makes guys plead guilty so they're sure to be in a facility they can watch the game...

I don't hear any convicts-to-be begging a TV room in prison to watch FSU-Florida... maybe because all the criminals who care are on the field!!! (Kidding, kidding. Sort of.)

I agree with Tigereyes and Purplenurple. In-state rivalries are always better. That's why there is always so much more passion when Ohio State plays Kent State or Akron then when they play Michigan. The Michigan game has no chance to compare with our games against Toledo and Cleveland State.

And before that ADMIN EDIT <Personal Insult DeletedYou're going to need to keep your insults a little less personal, sarcastic or not, Ricky. This is absolutely inappropriate.> has a chance to respond, I was being sarcastic.
