Cool Fred Hickman to ESPN

According to Rudy Martzke of USA Today Fred Hickman will be making his SportsCenter debut this weekend for ESPN. For those of you old enough to remember CNNSI you will know that this is a great hire for ESPN. I always loved the job he did for CNN and CNNSI. I say it is about time ESPN bring a guy like Hickman on board to add a little journalistic integrity to their coverage.

Never heard of him, but I'll be watching for him. Thanks for the heads-up.

You may be a bit too young to remember him as he made his mark in the mid to late 90s when CNN still cared about covering sports.

Now how young do you think I am? I do remember watching CNNSI when it was a channel, but I never watched it much. It was just a rip-off of ESPN.

Well, Hickman mostly did just the prime-time/SportsCenter slot. I don't think he was on much during the day. But, you may remember him when you see him. He has been out of the national media since CNNSI went under and he went to work for YES in NY.

I'll miss him doing pre and post-game Yankee coverage. He was very good for his three years at YES and the horrific replacements that filled in for him when he had time off made you like him even more. Be glad you never have to listen to Suzyn "Line-Shawt" Waldman.

I suppose you are a fan of the pablum and drivel that spews out of Stuart Scott's mouth on a routine basis...

Yeah really. I'll take Fred myself. Not someone who is trying to be 'down' with the players.

That is the one thing I like about Hickman is that he just sticks with reporting sports news and is not so much concerned with entertaining people. If I want a sportscast with crappy entertainment value I will watch the local news.

Thing is I actually used to like Stuart Scott when he first started but then his sportscasts morphed into nothing more than him spewing hip hop catchphrases with every highlight.

I like Hickman, but I don't think he is a good fit for sportcenter. I just see him more in a sports anchor role on local TV.

I remember Fred Hickman when he did some of the sports coverage in Detroit with WDIV (NBC). That was when the Detroit Tigers won the World Series back in 1984. When he did CNN Sports Tonight he was pretty good, ...I liked the different look they had, I mean, SportsCenter, it is the best, but I do like variety.
