Cool Anthony's Week 3 Picks

1

Last week: 5-10. Season totals: 15-16, Pct. .484. Best Bets: 3-3, Pct. .500.

Home team in capital letters; point spreads (opening line) in parentheses after underdog team; selections with point spreads in bold.

SUNDAY

N.Y. GIANTS 27, Cincinnati 17 (+13) - Too many favorites added up to a bloodbath commensurate with the one on Wall Street for me in Week 2, and you can pretty much throw out what the Bengals did against Tennessee because their type of offense never had a chance in the conditions imposed on it by the remnants of Hurricane Ike. If they don't keep this one respectable, feel free to go against them until further notice, no matter how much of a "bargain" they appear to be.

NEW ENGLAND 6, Miami 3 (+13) - As if things weren't bad enough for the New England offense: Now Laurence Maroney is banged up. Anyone who lays this number needs serious professional help.

BUFFALO 17, Oakland 10 (+9) - The Raiders have both lost and non-covered ten in a row on artificial turf - but I wouldn't give this many points on Trent Edwards against Temple!

WASHINGTON 27, Arizona 14 (+3) - Before handing the NFC West crown to the Cards, let's see what they do against a real football team - and in this case, one that has beaten them six straight times.

ATLANTA 16, Kansas City 6 (+4) - Losing by 15 to the Raiders at home is about as pathetic as it gets; and given KC's 3-8-1 spread record indoors since 1998, don't expect any massive form reversal this week, particularly with the Chiefs being reduced to Tyler Thigpen at quarterback by injuries to both Brodie Croyle and Damon Huard.

TENNESSEE 13, Houston 10 (+5) - If the Texans are to move forward, they have to start getting it done within their division. A late field goal - made or missed - decides this thing one way or the other.

Tampa Bay 20 (+3), CHICAGO 7 - Brian Griese gets the start again over Jeff Garcia, giving Griese the chance to stick it to the Bears for unloading him while holding onto the perfectly dreadful Kyle Orton. And you're getting points?

Carolina 24 (+3), MINNESOTA 13 - Here too the team with the distinct edge at quarterback is an underdog - plus Carolina is 16-3 against the line since 2002 inside NFL domes.

DENVER 27, New Orleans 20 (+4) - You gotta admire Mike Shanahan for going for two even though he never should have had the opportunity to do so; and the New Orleans defense bitterly disappointed last Sunday in Washington.

SAN FRANCISCO 24, Detroit 17 (+3 1/2) - In a way even better than the Tampa pick, as not only does San Fran's quarterback have a prove-'em-wrong motive, but their offensive coordinator does too - and the Lions haven't won out there since 1975. The three-and-a-half is always a potential red flag, but I'll ignore it.

SEATTLE 17, St. Louis 14 (+9 1/2) - The Seahawks have a bye next week, after which wide receivers Deion Branch and/or Bobby Engram may be able to return. So this one's all about survival, something Seattle will manage - barely.

PHILADELPHIA 24, Pittsburgh 16 (+3) - The Steelers won't even be willing, much less able, to attack Jim Johnson's defense the way Dallas did, and no way can any 3-4 shut down the West Coast Offense In Name Only the Eagles now present. Additionally, Pittsburgh hasn't won in Philadelphia since 1965!

BALTIMORE 17, Cleveland 9 (+2 1/2) - Guess Derek Anderson's bubble had to burst sooner or later. This could push Romeo Crennel over the edge and cause him to hand the starting job to Brady Quinn.

INDIANAPOLIS 23, Jacksonville 19 (+6) - The Colts simply don't look right. If the Jags can overcome the colossal embarrassment of allowing Trent Edwards to ring up a 119.8 passer-rating game at their expense, they should keep this close.

GREEN BAY 33 (+3), Dallas 23 - All the planets align perfectly: Both letdown (short week plus travel after the Monday night epic at home over the Eagles) and looking ahead (back home to face Washington next week) plague the Cowboys, and the home team has not only won eleven in a row in this series, but all eleven games had double-digit final margins. Lock city.

MONDAY NIGHT

SAN DIEGO 20, N.Y. Jets 16 (+9) - Has the "Bring Back Marty" chorus started up in San Diego again yet? The home side has dropped five straight in this one and the Jets are a highly reliable 7-2 against the spread on grass since 2006 - plus LaDainian Tomlinson is hurting.

BEST BETS: TAMPA BAY, CAROLINA, GREEN BAY

Default Week 3 Results

A pattern seems to be developing here: Last week Brad O. made his first-ever start in the NFL Pointspread Contest a winning one; this week, HibachiDG (TAFKA Doug Graham), a long-time absentee, returned to grab the win.

If the trend holds, someone who hasn't picked here in a long time - or maybe even ever - will adorn the Week 4 winner's circle. doublee perhaps? Or maybe Montrovant, whose 49ers are part of this contest every week, when in the straight-up Pick'Em that is not necessarily the case?

1st 2 HibachiDG: 10-6 (3-0) [5-0] - 600 points
2nd 4 The Running Man: 10-6 (3-0) [4-1] - 200 points
3rd 1 Anthony: 10-6 (1-2) - 100 points
4th 3 Brad O.: 8-8 - 60 points
5th 5 Jeff Boswell: 4-12 - 40 points
