Default Alvarez stepping down after this year

Story

Too bad. I said in the PSU thread that he's the best coach in the Big Ten. He will stay on as Athletic Director.

At various times he was on some people's lists of candidates to become a head coach in the NFL.

I don't think he's going anywhere Anthony. Like KB said, he made that program at Wisconsin. He's got god status in Madison for life.

I listened to him on an interview last year (Jim Rome show I think)....he's a real classy guy. He has family and his roots are in Wisconsin....he's not going anywhere.

This is the first I've heard about Alvarez stepping down...hopefully his successor will step in and pick up where Barry left off.

Alvarez is a great coach, does anyone know why he is retiring? Are their any rumors for a replacement? Alvarez turned it into a pretty big gig in Madison. Bucknut, you are in Turkey? Do you live there or in the military or something else. Just curious.

Defensive Coordinator Bret Bielema will replace Alvarez. It's a smart move on Wisconsin's part to have named a successor right away so as to not affect recruiting. Wisconsin is an extremely depleted team this year, especially on defense, and I think they will be lucky to reach a bowl game but if Bielema is able to replicate the success of Alvarez, Wisconsin will have another lifer.

Thanks Alex. Yeah, I believe the Badgers entire D-line are new starters. With the BIG 10 its going to be tough to get to a bowl game when only Indiana looks entirely hopeless at this point. Penn St. has a solid defense and Illinois might do better with Zook. Everybody else has at least some potential and I would say Iowa, Ohio St., and Michigan have a chance at the NC. Purdue might as well because of their weak schedule.
