George Carlin was one of the brightest men that ever walked the planet.

I don't oppose drilling in ANWR soley because of the environment... I oppose drilling in ANWR because I hate the oil companies and their control of people.

Who Controls America

Talk about saving the planet:

Carlin classism and racism

And while we are talking about Carlin,

Religion

-----------------

I'm glad you brought George Carlin up, because I think Americans should take some time to listen to George Carlin. He will always be one of the foremost liberal icons.

George Carlin was one who did not believe in God and now has learned he has a soul,..too bad his ass is in purgatory! He was funny, but a funny fool. R.I.P.

Carlin was special because he was different and really invented the whole genre of crude comedy. I wouldn't say he's the brightest man to ever walk the planet, but he made you think about routine sayings and things we take for granted. He questioned norms and made you think "outside the box" (ironically, he hated that phrase).

Well said.

To be clear, I didn't say he was THE brightest person to walk the planet, just one of the brightest.

I think I should have said, "one of the brightest 'celebrities' to ever walk the planet."

He was crucial to my development and use of the Socratic method. In his words, "teaching children to read is nice, but teaching them to question everything they read is just as important."

He didn't really invent the genre so much as he took it mainstream and made it more socially acceptable. Carlin himself credits the night he saw Lenny Bruce as the turning point of his career.

He dropped out of school at age 14.

Just more fuel to my fire that formal education actually makes a person dumb.

I never knew that. So he was not a college graduate?

Self-educated. Quite impressive.

I'd like to learn more about Carlin...

I know all of his stand-up, and much of his writing, but I know little about him personally.

I wonder if they are working on the documentary as we speak?

It doesn't make a person dumb. Well, at least it does for some people.

But, it IS overrated.

Case in point....I have a Masters Degree. Good enough to get me
a decent college teaching job here in SoCal.

My brother, on the other hand, went to one semester of
college...and he became a millionaire.

I don't like the idea of considering the value of one's intelligence or education on how much money they make...that said, I'm all for public education when it's the right kind...i.e. a liberal education which does not stiffle individuality and creativity but rather teaches citizens to think for themselves.

Carlin's commercialism rant on the American population being bought off by gadgets...brilliant and so true.

His comments on religion...a little bitter and over-simplified in my opinion. He tries too hard to make religion look ridiculous. No serious and thoughtful person I know with religious beliefs thinks about religion as Carlin describes it.

Well, many of us think that religion IS ridiculous. It is refreshing for those of us with that belief to hear someone with that large of a platform say something like that.

The thing is, even if "serious and thoughtful" people with religious beliefs don't think about religion as Carlin describes it - their "holy book" does. Most Christians don't really belief that Adam talked to a snake, but the book that they call "the word of God," says he did.
