Default Jorge Posada gets his 5 year Deal

It was a smart move to sign him to a long term deal. He swings a great bat and is getting better defensively each year. I think he got something like $7.75 million. Is that per year or for the entire five years? Sorry wasn't sure on that.

Its a staggered contract over the five years, its pretty complicated actually. The signing bonus is payable over five years, and increases, just like his salary will, his average salary is 5 years/51 million, or 10.2 million a year. There's also an escape clause for Posada and an option year for the Yankees.

I'm sorry, but Jorge Posada is only mediocre defensively, and he benefits greatly from hitting in the lineup he belongs to. I don't think I'd like to let him leave my team, but I don't see any way in the world he is worth this much money. What would Johnny Bench or Yogi Berra be worth in today's game?

Same opinion here -- but baseball has the worst salaries of all pro sports.

Plus, it's the Yankees.
Can you say, "bottomless budget," anyone!?

bottomless budget, no kidding. Baseball's salaries are getting out of hand. No way Posada is worth that much. He's a decent player, at best. But then again, as Lee said, it's the Yankees...

I didn't think so many people thought the same way as I did. All of you summed up my feelings on this contract. Although, I do think that Posada is one of the better catchers in baseball, I don't think he should be getting paid 10 million.

I agree....he is going to make all that money and he hits 7th in their lineup. No way is he worth that much. I guess that is one benefit for playing for the Yankees.

It seems to me that Jorge Posada got a lot of key hits for the Yankees in the 2001 season. He may not be worth that much money but that is the crazy owners doing that.
