Default Hockey in the United States??????

I started this thread because alot of the recent discussion on some of the posts have dealt with the failure of hockey to catch on in the United States. Being Canadian, I can tell you a great deal about the sport but I must admit, I am very ignorant when it comes to our national sport south of the border.

I know that professional and College hockey is quite popular in a few States such as Michigan, Minnesota, and Massachusetts.

Where else might the game be popular down in the US?

New England is generally good for hockey on the collegiate and pro level. The pro game is starting to become more popular in Pennsylvania. Aside from the Pittsburgh Penguins, the AHL teams and the Flyers generally draw well.

Thanks Alex .... I guess it goes without saying that hockey must do okay in New York as well? I guess with the huge population almost any sport recognizable must have some following.

Yes, it does very well on all levels in New York and a good chunk of the northeast for that matter.

Whether the teams draw well or not Florida seems to have taken an interest in hockey. Not only do we have the current Stanley Cup champs the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Florida Panthers. We also have the Jacksonville Barracudas of SPHL, Florida Everblades of the ECHL, Pennsacola Pilots of the ECHL. Also Florida, Florida State, Central Florida, and several other Florida colleges have hockey clubs as well.

Awesome PB .... that's good to know. I was aware of the pro franchises but I had no idea that hockey as a collegiate sport had taken on down there. Thanks.

When every sports network in Canada was talking about the NHLPA proposal last week, when every regional & network newscast had their top story as the NHLPA proposal... when every Canadian newspaper had Goodenow's and Bettman's ugly mugs on their front pages last week, USA Today had the NHLPA proposal on PAGE ELEVEN of the sports section; I imagine it barely made it onto ESPN too, and NHL is bumped to like #8 on the ESPN.com sidebar menu. The US is hosting the WJHC in a week; let's see if it makes page 10

I don't know what it is about Hockey.

I have been to games, sort of like watching it but never do.

Its' not as bad as Soccer.....

The only reason I can come up with is many people are not brought up playing. I live in Florida and playing Hockey is not talked about when your 10 years old. 1 place to skate in a big city like Jacksonville...... I guess when your from Canada and most the year it is frozen the best thing to play is Hockey. I guess playing Baseball or Football in 8 feet of snow is hard. We do have many lakes and rivers here but in the winter time we can't just put on some skates and jump on the pond.

I'm not even going to dignify this with a response.

Bottom line, the reason hockey isn't embraced by most Americans is because it's a sport in which they don't and can't EVER dominate in. So they hate it and never watch it.

Don't forget Soccer.

I guess Canada could start a league....?

No Americans allowed!

Where would Hockey be then?

If Canada turns its' back on Baseball or Football...... who cares?

If America turns its' back on any sport it is devastating.

I disagree. I'm not a hockey fan, but I respect it as a sport. It's just not embedded into the history and soul of the U.S. like it is in Canada. The other three big sports just have such a stronghold and storied history that hockey doesn't in the U.S. It has nothing to do with us not being able to compete with Canada. Fact is, the NHL wouldn't exist with the U.S.
