USA Today is reporting that after 22 years ESPN intends not to renew Mel Kiper's contract. I have to kind of wonder what is bringing this about. I always thought he did a pretty decent job with ESPN's draft coverage. I really don't get what they are doing at ESPN these days.

Could be that Kiper wants more money...
Or they got sick of his hair? Or, maybe, just maybe, they realized that there are other drafniks with at least as good a record who don't cost as much? That's the likely reason, seems to me. Dave

It doesn't sound like it is Kiper wanting more money it just sounds like ESPN wants to go in a different direction. |

Fear not, true believers. The latest is that they're still negotiating. As Kiper doesn't have much of anything to do until April, there's no real rush here. I just can't see Kiper and ESPN not working this out. What's the NFL Draft without MKJr? What's MKJr without the NFL Draft?

Well I'm sure the NFL Network would jump on Kiper. The NFL Network should just hire Peter Gammons, Bob Ley and David Aldridge and rename itself "Better alternate to that other sports channel."

Ah... da12ken hits the nail on the head, methinks.
Mark Mayock is fine doing the NFL Network's college rundown show, but Kiper would lend some real legitimacy that Mayock doesn't have. Dave

Yeah, I'm a fan of the "non-Boston-related-stuff" Gammons. When he's talking about other teams and providing those little nuggets of info you can't get anywhere, else, he's really good.
But he can't write an article or be on tv without mentioning the Red Sox in some form and it drives me nuts.

I've always enjoyed Mel Kiper leading up to and on draft day. He is one of the few personalities left at ESPN that care more about reporting sports than their own image and appealing to the younger crowd. Funny how I fall into the "younger crowd" and don't appreciate the antics of most of the people ESPN puts on TV.

Alex, I seriously doubt anyone really cares that much for a lot of the crap ESPN runs out there to pander to younger viewers. ESPN just needs to realize that its core audience is tuning in to either watch sports or be informed on the world of sports and not be entertained by some circus freak who does not become hypnotized by the red light on the camera. |

They better not replace him with someone as annoying as Stephen A. Smith. They already foolishly replaced David Aldridge with Stephen "Damn, God Made Me Perfect" A. Smith. It wouldn't surprise me.
